List of Peer Power Presentations

Learning Gender

This is Peer Power's introductory presentation. It includes a discussion of how we learn to act in masculine and feminine ways. Through this presentation, students are invited to examine the consequences of gender stereotypes.

Media Image

Our ideas on race, gender, social class and sexuality are influenced by media representations. Through this presentation, students are invited to develop awareness of the media images that surround us, and how they affect our lives.

Relationship and Sexual Violence

This is a discussion of how many lives in the United States are affected by the fear and reality of sexual violence. The presentation focuses on how terms (e.g. "rape," "sexual harassment," "relationship violence") can be defined, and on how definitions of "consent" come into play. Students are invited to consider the ways that gender stereotypes and expectations can contribute to violence in relationships.

Homophobia

Regardless of our sexuality, homophobia affects all of our lives, given its relationship with gender-based expectations and assumptions. The presentation provides an opportunity to explore how homophobia can affect each of us, limiting our potential and encouraging us to judge ourselves and each other.

Body Image

Eating disorders and low self-esteem are critical problems for young women and, increasingly, young men. Through this presentation, students are invited to begin critically examining possible connections between society's standards for judging physical appearance and the kinds of choices individuals make.

Difference

Misunderstandings and stereotypes around racial, cultural, and ethnic differences cause prejudice and fear in the U.S. In this presentation, students are invited to examine the ways prejudice can occur and its effects on people's lives and choices. Students also receive an opportunity to begin identifying ways to challenge misunderstandings and stereotypes around differences.

Gender Equity and Work

How do gender stereotypes affect us in the workplace? This presentation explores some of the consequences of gender stereotypes, from choices people make about education and careers, to the "wage gap" in contemporary society.
